DC Senior Named 2020 Amplify Scholar

As students across the country wind down the final weeks of school, albeit in a vastly different situation than probably anyone imagined at the beginning of the year, many college seniors are thinking about their next steps out of high school. Earlier this year, we caught up with the class of 2020 to share an update on the accomplishments and successes of this class through their push to college and onto careers. Maya is a member of this extraordinary class and recently found out she was one of 15 recipients to win a 2020 Goldberg and Amplify scholarship!

“I was so happy to find out I won. I can remember staying up until 2:00 am the night I submitted the application with my mother, and to see how happy she was when she found out I won was special. Just being able not to have to think about how we are going to pay for college or things like that is huge. I’m really excited.”

Each year 15 outstanding graduates are selected to join the Amplify Scholars Program. Amplify scholars received Stipends for critical expenses outside of tuition and room & board, a one-on-one mentor who will support them through their educational and professional pathways, an invitation to Amplify Scholars Academy.

For Maya, who is looking to attend Montclair State University to study Journalism, the assistance will be crucial as she begins the next phase of her educational journey.

“Montclair University stuck out to me from the moment I walked on campus. I knew that’s where I wanted to go. As far as studying Journalism, I’ve always loved writing and get a certain excitement from just typing on a keyboard and seeing words come alive. I’m looking forward to this next.”

Maya has attended a DC school since the fourth grade, starting at DC KEY Academy all the way to DC College Preparatory. Outside of maintaining a 3.7 GPA, a member of the theater troupe at DC College Preparatory and was elected president of the Student Government Association as a freshman.
